Covers for fruit boxes

The piece that closes the top of an open fruit box: it protects the produce, holds it in place and, if printed, presents it on the shelf.

A cover is the top closure of an open box or tray of fruit and vegetables. It is placed over the produce once the box has been packed and does three jobs at once: it protects the fruit from pollution and dirt, keeps it in place during storage and transport, and helps preserve the temperature of the produce when it leaves the cold store. And being customisable, it is also a branding surface at the point of sale.

There is no single cover, and the catalogue sheet shows the four types we work with. The elastic cover is a sleeve that fits over the cardboard box and lets the produce be seen through a window. The reinforcement net cover is a net that wraps the wooden box and holds the fruit without hiding it, as can be seen with the oranges. The cardboard net cover combines net with a printed paperboard skirt on the front. And the adhesive base cover is a clear sheet fixed to the box that leaves the fruit fully visible.

The choice depends above all on the pack and the produce. In a wooden box with citrus, net provides hold and ventilation; in a cardboard tray with stone fruit, the elastic or adhesive base cover gives a more closed, cleaner presentation. If you want to communicate brand or origin, the cardboard net and printed elastic covers offer more printing surface.

Compared with other pieces of the same box, the cover is what closes it. The paperboard band runs across the box to identify it and reinforce the brand, but does not cover it; the box liner works on the inside, under the produce. Covers are available in several colours and sizes, matched to the box format you use.

At Fontanet Group, from Fraga (Huesca) and with a team of more than 30 years in the sector, we help you choose the cover for your box, your fruit and your destination. Tell our sales team the format and whether you want printing, and we will prepare a sample and a proposal.

Frequently asked questions

Which cover should I choose for a wooden box?

With citrus and wooden boxes, the reinforcement net or cardboard net cover is usually used, as they hold the fruit and leave it visible. Tell us your produce and we will recommend the type.

Can they be printed with my brand?

Yes, the covers are customisable. The cardboard net and printed elastic covers offer the most surface for brand and origin.

Can they cover the whole pallet?

No, they are covers for the fruit box or tray. To protect the top of the pallet, what you need is a pallet top cover.
