Semi-automatic case sealer

It applies packaging tape to the top and bottom of the box in a single step and adjusts automatically to its size.

The semi-automatic case sealer takes hand taping off the end of the line, a job that is slow and never comes out the same twice. The operator feeds in the cardboard box, already filled and with its flaps closed, and the machine draws it through and applies packaging tape to the top and bottom in a single pass. Its catalogue sheet highlights automatic tape closing, high working capacity and automatic variable format.

That automatic variable format is what sets it apart from semi-automatic machines with manual adjustment. With those, the operator resets the machine every time the box size changes; here the case sealer adapts by itself, which makes it convenient when formats alternate at the same station. It is worth being clear about one thing: the case sealer closes the box, it does not erect or fill it. If you want to automate those steps as well, that is the job of the automatic case packer.

When does it pay off? As a guide, when more than about 100 boxes a day are being sealed by hand, a semi-automatic machine soon pays for itself. With high, continuous volumes, in the order of 500 boxes a day or more, full automation is worth considering. And if hand sealing leads to complaints about boxes coming open, it is time to mechanise whatever the volume.

The machine works with machine packaging tape: long rolls, usually around 900 to 1,000 metres, on a 76 mm core, which avoids constant roll changes. The adhesive is chosen according to the environment: hot melt for clean cardboard at normal temperature, and solvent when there is cold, humidity or recycled cardboard. The tape data sheet recommends applying it by machine above +10 °C. The exact width depends on the head fitted to your unit.

At Fontanet Group (Fraga, Huesca) our team has more than 30 years in the sector. MARFONT, our machinery division, handles installation, operator training and technical service. Tell us which boxes you seal and how many a day, and our sales team will propose the case sealer and the packaging tape that goes with it.
