Foam roll for packaging

Foam is a thin, white foam sheet that is soft to the touch and very light. Its main job is not so much to stop a heavy knock as to protect the surface of the product: it prevents a lacquered, polished, painted or glass piece from being scratched when it rubs against another piece, the box or the pallet strapping itself. Even so, the catalogue sheet also credits it with good impact absorption.

That combination makes it very useful as a first layer. The piece is wrapped in foam to look after the finish and, if the product is also fragile, bubble wrap or void fill is added on top. For furniture, aluminium profiles, household appliances, frames or machined metal parts, foam alone is usually enough for them to arrive without marks. It is also used as a separator between layers of product inside the same box.

It is supplied on a roll, in different thicknesses and widths. Thin gauges adapt better to complicated shapes and take up little space; thicker ones give more cushioning. It is flexible and easy to handle: it can be cut with a craft knife or scissors, it does not shed particles and it does not stain, which matters with products going on display or to the end customer.

Within the protection range, foam differs from bubble wrap in being thinner, more uniform and softer, designed above all for the surface; bubble wrap cushions more but takes up more space. If what you need to protect is specific edges and corners, rather than wrapping the whole piece, the option is U- or L-shaped foam profile.
