EPS polystyrene box for insulated transport

The polystyrene box, made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), is the insulated pack par excellence for moving products that cannot break the cold chain. EPS is made up mostly of air trapped in small cells, and that is what gives it its insulating capacity: it slows the transfer of heat between outside and inside and keeps the contents at temperature for longer than a cardboard box.

That is why it is used with fresh or frozen food: fish and seafood, meat, ready meals, ice cream, dairy or samples that have to arrive cold. Inside the box it is usually combined with ice packs or ice, depending on the product and the length of the journey. The box does not generate cold by itself: it preserves the cold the product already has, so it is best to load it with goods that are already at temperature.

As well as insulating, it protects. The EPS walls cushion knocks and do not absorb water, so the box withstands the damp, the dripping of ice and the temperature changes that would ruin a cardboard pack. And it is very light: it adds little weight to the shipment, is easy to handle and helps keep transport costs down.

It differs from the rest of the protection range in its function: bubble wrap, foam or loose fill protect against knocks inside a box; the polystyrene box is the pack itself, and its main value is thermal. It is available in different sizes with its lid, and the choice depends on the volume of product, whether it will carry ice packs and how long it has to last until it reaches its destination. To close it for transport, tape around the lid is all you need.
