Cardboard pallet layer pads
A sheet of cardboard between each layer of the load: the weight is spread, the layers stay aligned and the product on top does not mark the product below.
A layer pad is a sheet of cardboard placed between the layers of a pallet. Its job is simple and very specific: to turn each layer into a flat, continuous base on which to rest the next one. Without it, the weight of the top layer rests only on the points of contact with the one below, and that is where deformation, marks and shifting appear during transport.
It makes the biggest difference with goods that do not form a flat surface on their own: reels, containers, jars, sacks or boxes of different sizes. The catalogue sheet shows it with a pallet of stretch film reels three layers high, with a layer pad between each one and another on the wooden base. Each sheet spreads the load evenly between layers, helps keep the goods aligned when building the pallet and increases stability both in the lorry and in the warehouse.
It should not be confused with its sister products in the same family. The pallet top sheet protects the top of the load from dust, damp or sun; the edge protector reinforces the vertical edges against strapping and film; and honeycomb cardboard board is the high compression-strength material for general-purpose support and protection. The layer pad works inside the pallet, between layers, and is often combined with the other three.
When choosing one, the goods are what matter: weight per layer, how many layers the pallet carries, whether the product is rigid or deforms and whether the load will be stacked. That defines the size, which usually matches the pallet footprint, and the thickness. A layer pad that is too thin bows under heavy loads and loses its purpose; an oversized one only adds weight and cost.
At Fontanet Group, from Fraga (Huesca) and with a team with more than 30 years in the sector, we advise you on matching size and thickness to your actual load. Tell our sales team what you palletise and how many layers it has, and we will prepare a proposal for you.
Advantages
- Spreads the weight. Each layer rests on a continuous surface, not on points of contact.
- More stable load. Improves pallet stability during transport and storage.
- Prevents deformation. Protects stacked product from marks and damage between layers.
- Well-aligned pallet. Makes it easy to build each layer in place, without shifting.
- Made to measure. Available in different sizes and thicknesses depending on the load.

Frequently asked questions
How many layer pads does a pallet need?
The usual is one between each layer of goods and, if the pallet base is uneven, another on the wood. It depends on how many layers you carry and how rigid the product is.
What is the difference between a layer pad and a pallet top sheet?
The layer pad goes between layers and spreads the weight inside the pallet. The top sheet covers the top of the load and protects it from dust, damp and sun.
Which thickness should I choose?
It depends on the weight per layer and whether the pallet is stacked. Tell us what goods you carry and how many layers the pallet has, and we will recommend the thickness.
