Honeycomb cardboard boards

A honeycomb structure between two paper liners: high compression strength for very little weight.

A honeycomb cardboard board has a core of hexagonal cells, like a honeycomb, glued between two paper liners. That structure is what gives it its main virtue: very high compression strength in relation to its weight. Depending on the grade chosen, it can exceed 70 tonnes per square metre, and it is still a light material that is easy to handle.

That is why it is used where corrugated board falls short: as a base supporting heavy loads, as a rigid separator inside the pallet, as surface protection in industrial packaging or as a support for goods that cannot have a base that gives way. Because it weighs little, it reduces logistics costs compared with timber or other heavier materials.

It is made with different liner grades: recycled, kraft or coated white, which is the option when the board will be on show or is going to be printed. It also accepts PP coverings that add an anti-abrasion or water barrier function, useful when the board rubs against the goods or will be exposed to humidity. Dimensions, thicknesses and strengths are adapted to each requirement.

Within the pallet protection family, the board is the general-purpose material with the highest mechanical performance. The cardboard layer pad handles separation between layers of light or medium loads, the pallet top sheet covers the top face and the edge protector reinforces the edges. When the load is heavy or the base has to hold without deforming, the honeycomb board is the natural candidate.

To get the board right you need to know the weight it will bear, how that weight is distributed, what area it covers and whether there will be humidity or rubbing. At Fontanet Group, from Fraga (Huesca) and with a team of more than 30 years in the sector, we advise you on choosing grade, thickness and covering. Talk to our sales team about it.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is honeycomb board?

Depending on grade and thickness, compression strength can exceed 70 t/m². Tell us the load it has to bear and we will recommend the right reference.

Does it withstand humidity?

Cardboard on its own does not, but the board accepts PP coverings that act as a water barrier and also protect it from rubbing.

How does it differ from a cardboard layer pad?

Honeycomb board has a honeycomb core and is designed for demanding loads and support. A layer pad is the sheet placed between layers to spread the weight of lighter loads.
