The corner protector is the cheapest part of the pallet and the one that decides whether the goods arrive intact. Four cardboard profiles on the edges completely change how a load behaves when the film tightens, when the strap pulls and when the forklift brushes past. This guide explains which protectors really exist, when each one suits, what can be made to measure and how they work alongside film and strapping.
At Fontanet Group we have spent 14 years supplying industrial packaging from Fraga, in the heart of the Bajo Cinca, with a team that adds up to more than 30 years in the sector. The corner protector is one of those products almost nobody looks at until a return arrives: the pallet comes back with the box corners crushed, the load out of square and the customer annoyed. The cause is nearly always the same, and nearly always fixed by something that costs cents.
What is a corner protector and what problem does it actually solve?
A corner protector — also called an edge protector or angle board — is a rigid angled profile placed on the edge of a palletised load to protect the corners and spread the pressure of the restraint. It goes vertically on the four edges of the pallet and is held in place by the film or the strapping itself.
The problem it solves is elementary physics. Both film and strapping restrain by squeezing, and all that force concentrates exactly where the load has the least contact surface: the edge. A strap without a protector bears on a line a few millimetres wide and cuts into the box; the film, as it tensions, digs into the four corners and caves them in. The protector takes that same force and spreads it along its two flanges, over a much larger surface. The total pressure does not change; what changes is how many square centimetres share it.
- Protects angles and edges from knocks and from film tearing.
- Spreads the strapping pressure instead of concentrating it on a line.
- Reinforces vertically: the four protectors work as columns.
- Improves stacking capacity, which is what lets you put one pallet on top of another without crushing the load underneath.
- Stabilises the whole: less movement in the lorry, fewer incidents and fewer returns.
The two-minute proof
Strap an empty box with no protector and pull tight. You will see the strap mark sunk into the board before you even reach working tension. Repeat with a protector on the edge and pull the same: the box is not marked. It is not about the quality of the strap or the strength of the operator, it is about the surface sharing the load.
The two types we work with, and when to use each
Our range has two families of corner protector, and they do not compete with each other: they solve different logistics scenarios. Choosing wrong is rarely expensive because of the product, but because of what happens around it.
Compact board: the one that leaves with the pallet
100 % cardboard, in an angled profile. It is the standard solution and covers most shipments: it protects the angles, reinforces the palletised load, improves stacking and is made in various sizes, thicknesses, colours and finishes. It has three practical advantages that count day to day: it is light, it is easy to cut and handle, and it is recycled with the rest of the packaging board without the recipient having to separate anything.
It is the natural choice when the pallet goes out and does not come back: export, delivery to retail, shipment to end customer. Nobody has to recover it, store it or return it.

Made from recycled and recyclable HDPE, this is the solution for securing palletised loads when board falls short. It protects the pallet corners against knocks and deformation, improves stability when film or strapping is applied and spreads the restraint pressure to avoid damaging the goods, just like the board one, but with high resistance and a long service life.
Its logic is the opposite of board: it is not meant to leave with the pallet but to stay. It pays off on heavy loads and in closed loops — deliveries to your own stores, fixed routes, returnable packaging — where the same protector makes dozens of trips. On a single-use export shipment it makes no sense, because it is lost at destination.

What can be made to measure
The corner protector is a catalogue product that behaves like a bespoke one, and much of its value lies there. The four variables that get adjusted are size, thickness, colour and printing.
Length: the real height of your load
We cut the protectors to the exact length of the pallet. This looks like a detail but it is what separates a protector that protects from one that gets in the way: if it falls short, it leaves an uncovered stretch exactly where the strap will mark; if it is too long, it sticks out above the load, folds over and snags during handling. Measure the height of your palletised load, not the empty pallet, and order that.
Thickness: matched to the load
Thickness is chosen according to the load the protector has to shield and the pressure the restraint will apply. We do not publish a closed table of thickness per kilo because it would be false precision: the useful thickness also depends on the type of goods, on whether there is strapping as well as film, and on the journey the pallet will make. Colour and finish
The range comes in several colours and finishes. Natural kraft is the cheapest and reads as minimally processed; white is the best base for printing and gives a cleaner look on the shelf and on the dock. If your brand identity calls for a specific colour, we look into it.
Custom printing
The printed corner protector is probably the most wasted brand carrier in the whole of logistics. It sits on the four corners of the pallet, at eye level, and is seen in your warehouse, in the lorry, on the customer dock and on their racking, for the whole time the load is assembled. Since you were going to fit the protector anyway, the extra cost of printing it is marginal compared with any other brand action.
- Logo and corporate colour: identifies your goods in a warehouse full of pallets from other suppliers.
- Handling symbols: fragile, this way up, do not stack. They go where the operator looks.
- Reference or campaign: batch, destination, season.
- Image on delivery: a pallet with printed protectors reads as careful work, and that counts in how the customer sees you.
How a custom protector is ordered
You tell us what the goods are, how much the pallet weighs, how tall the load is and where it goes. We propose size, thickness and colour, and if it is printed we prepare the artwork with your logo for approval before production. Standard items ship from stock; made-to-measure is scheduled with its lead time.
Protector, film and strapping: how they work together
The protector does not work alone. Our catalogue recommendation says it plainly: use it to protect the sides with film as well as with strapping. Each element does something different and it is the combination that restrains the load.
- Build the load on the pallet as evenly as possible: the squarer it is, the better the protector seats.
- Fit the four protectors on the vertical edges, resting on the base and covering the full height of the load.
- Hold them with the film: the first turns already fix them in place, and from there the film works bearing on them instead of digging into the board.
- Add strapping if the load calls for it: on heavy or unstable loads, the horizontal strap runs over the protectors, which are what stop it cutting into the goods.
- Check the alignment before moving the pallet: a shifted or twisted protector spreads nothing and destabilises the load as well.
The five mistakes we see most
- Fitting two instead of four. The two unprotected corners are the ones that arrive crushed.
- A protector shorter than the load. The uncovered stretch is exactly where the strap marks.
- Thickness below what the load needs. The protector collapses, and a collapsed protector spreads nothing.
- Not securing them. If the film or strap does not catch them, they shift on the first hard brake.
- Reusing a damaged cardboard one. With a crease or a previous crush it has lost exactly the stiffness you fitted it for.

Applications by sector
Logistics and distribution centres
The highest and steadiest consumption. Pallets of general goods passing through platforms, cross-docking and racking, with repeated handling and many different hands. Standard cardboard protectors rule here, cut to the length of the load, and what matters is availability: never running out and getting it fast.
Metal and machinery industry
Heavy, dense loads with hard edges, where the strapping really bites. This is the ground for higher thicknesses and, where the circuit allows, for the reinforced protector: weight concentrated on a small base is what punishes a corner most.
Ceramics and construction materials
Tiles and building material: a lot of weight per pallet and a product that is fragile at the edge. In this sector a knocked corner does not mean an ugly box, it means broken pieces, so the protector is always combined with strapping and ordered with a margin of thickness.
Export and container loads
A long journey multiplies any weakness: more transhipments, more hours of vibration and a stow where your pallet carries whatever is put on top. Here the stacking capacity the four vertical protectors provide stops being an extra and becomes the main reason to fit them. And since the packaging does not return, board is the logical option.
Furniture and bulky goods
Large pieces, light relative to their volume and with visible surfaces that will not take a single mark. The protector shields the edge of the product itself, not just the pallet, and it is common to order it in white or printed because it stays with the product all the way to the point of sale.
Fresh produce
Our home sector. Pallets of fruit boxes leaving the packhouse cold and travelling far, with cardboard boxes that already suffer from cold-store humidity. The protectors stop the film caving in the corners of the top boxes and help the column withstand stacking. They combine with the rest of the packaging in the fresh produce range.

The cardboard protector has a recyclability advantage that is above all practical: it goes into the paper stream together with the boxes and the rest of the packaging, so the recipient does not have to separate anything or manage a different waste. That detail, which looks minor, is what makes it actually get recycled rather than end up in the reject fraction.
The reinforced one plays a different card. It is made from recycled HDPE and it is recyclable, but its environmental argument is not end of life, it is reuse: a part that makes many trips spreads its impact across all of them. That is why the honest comparison is not "board good, plastic bad", but what fits your circuit. A plastic protector reused fifty times and returned may come out better than a board one thrown away on every shipment; a plastic one lost at destination on the first trip certainly does not.
- Board: recycled with the packaging, no prior separation. Ideal when the pallet does not return.
- Reinforced HDPE: recycled and recyclable material, designed for many uses. Ideal when the pallet returns.
- Less material is not always better: a protector short on thickness lets the damage through, and lost goods weigh far more than the grams saved.
