Moulded pulp fruit trays for export

Plastic-free moulded pulp trays, recyclable and compostable: the answer when a European buyer demands sustainable packaging.

A moulded pulp fruit tray is made by moulding cellulose pulp from recovered paper fibre and water, with no plastic additives. The result is a rigid tray with a matt feel and natural colour that is recycled in the blue paper and cardboard bin and is also compostable. It is the natural choice when fruit is exported to retail chains in northern Europe or when the customer's specification calls for plastic-free packaging.

Its least-known technical strength is absorption. The fibre retains surface moisture, in the region of 3 % of its own weight, and that prevents a film of water from forming at the point of contact between fruit and tray, which is exactly where fungal problems start. For fruit coming out of cold storage into a temperature swing, that capacity makes the difference compared with an impermeable material. It works from −20 °C to +80 °C, so it is compatible with cold stores and cooling tunnels.

The standard range is organised by box format and number of cavities. For the 60x40 box (F60X40 data sheet), the tray measures 580 x 380 mm ±5 mm and runs from the 20-cavity reference, for calibres of 100-105 mm, to the 56-cavity reference, for 60-65 mm. For the 40x30 box (F40X30 data sheet) there are references from 10 to 22 cavities. Both ranges suit all kinds of round fruit: apples, peaches, nectarines or tomatoes.

It is suitable for food contact in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 and is available with FSC certification, which confirms that the fibre comes from responsibly managed forests. For flat peaches, with their flattened shape, there are also moulded pulp trays with a dedicated cavity.

From Fraga (Huesca) we supply packhouses and cooperatives across mainland Spain and export to the rest of Europe. We help you choose the reference based on the actual calibre of your fruit and send you a physical sample. For colours, stock of each reference and quantities per pallet, ask our sales team.

Advantages

  • Plastic-free. Moulded pulp from recovered fibre: recyclable in the blue bin and compostable.
  • Absorbs moisture. It retains surface moisture and prevents water at the contact point with the fruit, where fungal problems start.
  • FSC certification available. Fibre from responsibly managed forests, for demanding specifications.
  • Wide range of calibres. In 60x40, from 20 cavities (100-105 mm) to 56 cavities (60-65 mm).
  • Suitable for cold. Works from −20 °C to +80 °C: cold stores and cooling tunnels.

Frequently asked questions

Does a moulded pulp tray withstand cold storage?

Yes. It works from −20 °C to +80 °C and its ability to absorb surface moisture is an advantage when fruit comes out of the cold and condensation forms. What it does not allow is reuse: it is single-use packaging.

Which reference do I need for my calibre?

In a 60x40 box the range runs from 20 cavities for calibres of 100-105 mm to 56 cavities for 60-65 mm; in 40x30, from 10 to 22 cavities. Tell us your fruit and average calibre and we will give you the exact reference.

Do you have moulded pulp trays with FSC certification?

Yes, FSC certification is available across the moulded pulp range. Let us know when you request a quote so the offer includes it.
