Plastic fruit trays for kiwi
Trays with oval cavities, shaped to the elongated form of the kiwi, so each piece travels lying on its side without moving.
Kiwis are not round fruit. They are elongated and, inside the box, they lie on their side. In a round-cavity tray designed for apples or peaches they sit badly: they roll, tilt and rub against neighbouring pieces. That is why kiwi trays use oval cavities, longer than they are wide, which cradle the fruit lying down and keep it in place during handling and transport.
In plastic, kiwi trays are made from polypropylene (PP) or recycled PET (rPET). PP is tough, does not deform with the humidity of the cold store and can be washed and reused. rPET is stiff at low thickness, gives a more polished presentation (in clear or black) and meets specifications that call for recycled material. Both are impermeable, which is worth bearing in mind for a fruit that spends long periods in cold storage.
As an indicative reference, kiwis run in calibres from 45 to 65 mm. In a 60x40 box the usual configurations range from 28 to 36 cavities, and in a 50x30 box from 18 to 24. In rPET it is usually used in 40x30 and 30x50 cm formats. The average calibre varies between seasons, so it is worth measuring the current fruit before placing the order.
Kiwis give off moisture through their skin, which is why moulded pulp is also a widely used option for this fruit: it absorbs that surface moisture and is compostable. If your customer asks for plastic-free packaging, we have moulded pulp trays; if resistance in cold storage or presentation matters more, plastic is the choice.
From Fraga (Huesca) we advise you on material, format and calibre, and we send you a physical sample so you can check the fit with your kiwis. The available references, with their thickness and number of cavities, are confirmed by our sales team.

Frequently asked questions
Why do kiwis need an oval cavity?
Because they are elongated and lie on their side. In a round cavity they roll and rub against neighbouring pieces; an oval one keeps them seated.
Which kiwi calibre does it take?
As a guide, from 45 to 65 mm, with 28 to 36 cavities in a 60x40 box and 18 to 24 in 50x30. Send us a sample and we will tell you the reference.
Plastic or moulded pulp for kiwis?
Moulded pulp absorbs moisture from the skin and is compostable; plastic stands up better to cold storage and allows reuse or recycled material. We have both options.
