Hair nets

Keeping hair tied back is one of the first rules in any food handling area. A hair net is the simplest way to comply with it day to day: a fine, light net placed over tied-back hair that holds it in place, preventing a loose hair from falling onto the product, the table or the packing line.

What sets it apart is comfort. Being a net, it weighs very little, lets the scalp breathe and is barely noticeable on the head, which is welcome during long shifts, in hot conditions or in facilities where the operator moves around a lot. It is also discreet: it holds hair without the bulk of a cap, so it is suitable for customer-facing roles too, such as counters or points of sale.

Compared with a disposable cap, a hair net covers less. A cap encloses the whole head and retains dust and particles better, which is why it is preferred in more sensitive processes or for visitors. A hair net, on the other hand, suits workstations where what is required is to hold hair comfortably and continuously. Many companies use both: hair nets for staff at their usual workstation and caps in the areas or at the times that require them.

For it to do its job, the hair must be tied back and sit completely inside the net, with no strands outside. For people with very long or thick hair, it is worth considering whether a hair net is enough or whether a cap is more practical. And like the rest of protective clothing, it is completed with a coat, overshoes, gloves and handwashing on entry.
