Void fill shreds for packaging
Loose paper, wood or plastic fill that takes up the gaps in the box, cushions knocks and improves the presentation of the product.
Void fill shreds solve a problem that no wrapping solves on its own: empty space. When the product does not fill the box, it shifts with every sudden stop and every bit of handling, and that movement is what ends in knocks and breakages. The shreds take up the free space, hold the piece in place and, being a springy material, cushion the impacts that come through the walls of the box.
They also have a second function that sets them apart from other protective materials: presentation. An open box with shreds looks cared for and deliberate, which is why they are common in gift hampers and gift sets, gourmet products, wine, cosmetics, premium fruit or items displayed at the point of sale. With fruit, decorative wood shavings are used to protect delicate pieces individually and give them a natural, branded look.
There are three materials, and each one suits a particular use. Paper shreds, white or kraft, are light, are associated with paper packaging and work well for shipments and gift boxes. Wood shavings have the most natural, artisan look and are widely used in food and traditional products. Plastic shreds are clear and shiny, do not break down with humidity and let the product be seen through the fill.
Compared with bubble wrap or foam, shreds do not wrap the piece: they adapt by themselves to any shape and size with no cutting or measuring, which makes them very quick for boxes with mixed products. For very fragile pieces, the safest approach is to combine them: wrap in bubble wrap and fill the gaps with shreds. They are practical, light and easy to use, and add hardly any weight to the shipment.
