Net for potatoes and onions

Potatoes, onions and garlic have something in common with citrus fruit —they need ventilation— and something very different: they are often sold in heavy formats that pass through many hands, with margins where the cost per packed kilo decides everything. That is why the choice of net here is less about colour and more about strength and the weight of the final pack.

For large and bulk sacks, the benchmark is raschel net. It is knitted by interlacing threads, not extruded, and that interlacing spreads the tension across the whole mesh: it withstands more and stretches further without deforming. It costs a little more per metre than extruded net, but in a heavy sack the difference is recovered in the sack that does not split in the warehouse or during loading. It is supplied on reels for machines and as pre-cut sacks, with or without a drawstring.

For consumer packs of a few kilos, extruded net is sufficient and more economical, and it allows the highest speeds on a netting machine. The most common mistake is to assume that the same product takes the same net in a consumer pack and in a large sack: the weight of the pack determines the width and the type of net.

As for colour, red is the usual choice for potatoes and onions: it reinforces the product's own tone and gives contrast on the shelf. White is used for garlic, as it does not interfere with the bulb and is the best base if the net is printed. In the packhouse, the REK 140 netting machine handles potatoes, onions and garlic in series at up to 50 baskets per minute, with a 5 x 0.35 mm strapping closure. Polyethylene net is recyclable: compacted with a press, it stops being bulky waste.
